Cruising Destinations From Mystic, Connecticut

Sailing, clam bakes and lighthouses are as synonymous with New England as the Kennedys are with political fame. And now, with Bavaria Yachts’ newest location in Mystic, Connecticut, adventure and fun-filled destinations are just a cruise away. From the surf-lapped beaches of Montauk to the historic lighthouses in the Southern Narragansett Bay, the charm of the New England cruising ground is nothing short of enchanting.

Of course, Mystic provides great access to numerous world-famous cruising destinations like Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Newport, Rhode Island. But with so many sailing destinations available from Mystic, we’ve dedicated this blog to highlighting just a few of our slightly-lesser-known favorites.

Montauk, N.Y.

Here it’s all about the romantic cliffs, fresh salt air, and the call of the ocean. Montauk’s restaurant scene makes this peninsula even more appetizing with tantalizing culinary delights. When cruising around the bays, make sure you stop to enjoy two of our favorite spots:

Banzai Burger:

A straight-from-the-beach kinda place, the sushi and juicy lamb burgers are highlights. Artisanal beer flows freely, as does the music. 2095 Montauk Highway, Montauk, NY [MAP].

Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina:

The 35 acres of historic waterfront property are open to the public, as are the eateries that sit on them. First, grab a pre-dinner cocktail at Barracuda Bar Cocktails & Bites then enjoy the delicious grilled local tuna at Gulf Coast Kitchen, all while your yacht is in plain view. 32 Star Island Road, Montauk, NY [MAP].

Block Island, RI

Often referred to as the “Northeast’s Bermuda”, this classic New England destination, with amazing bluffs, historic lighthouses, cool shipwrecks and miles of beautiful beaches, is a most enchanting spot. We recommend that you rent a moped (or bike) to tour the island (both are readily available). Numerous bars and restaurants mixed in with unique shopping boutiques make this spot a great one to spend a day or two. Some of our favorite stops:

Block Island Southeast Lighthouse:

There are two on the island, but this is our favorite.

Juice ‘n Java:

Block Island’s Coffee House and Internet Cafe, this place has an eclectic “islandy” feel. The java menu features six or so fresh roasted organic, fair-trade beans or blends daily. They also feature organic tea, espresso drinks, smoothies, delicious sandwiches and Hawaiian shaved ice. Enjoy treats baked in-house while listening to the sounds of reggae or Hawaiian music as you gaze upon the art and chat with the locals. Dodge Street, Block Island, RI [MAP].

Star Department Store:

This old fashioned general store has everything any traveler could want. Clothing, candy, and jewelry; this is a fun filled stop for many visitors to the island. Water Street, Block Island, RI [MAP].

Narragansett, RI

The popular beach town of Narragansett draws people for its charm and four of the best beaches in Rhode Island. Set on the peninsula east of Point Judith Pond and the Pettaquamscutt River, the town has many grand old shingle houses that overlook the ocean and a handful of restaurants and shops directly across the street from the beach. Our favorite must-dos:

Cruise by the remains of Whale Rock Light on your trip to Narragansett. Make sure to look up the story of this lighthouse first (or I should say, it’s remains); the story is a good one.

Eat dinner at Trio:

This wonderful little find has a culinary philosophy guided by locally-purchased, locally-supported and organic whenever possible. The menu reflects authentic New England seafood offerings with South County influences and ingredients, as well as steaks and chops and house-made pastas inspired by the Mediterranean. Al fresco dining can be enjoyed against the backdrop of Narragansett Bay, just steps from the beach. Bavaria Yachts Center Stage for New Annapolis Spring Show

Bavaria Yachts proudly took center stage for the 1st Annual Annapolis Spring Boat Show, brought to you by the same folks that put on THE boat show of the year each October in Annapolis. The turnout was tremendous for all three days of the show, and the buzz around Bavaria continues to grow with each visitor. We were proud to hear consistent comments like “these are by far the best boats we’ve seen in a very long time”. Visitors marveled at the attention to details, the tangible build quality, and the design for ease of sailing and ease of living. (Unfortunately, at the boat show they couldn’t also experience the incredible sailing performance and handling of the Farr Yachts designs). People also marveled that these clearly premium yachts are offered at a similar price point to the mainstream French and American builders (thanks to the ground-breaking Factory Direct model that eliminates middlemen and inventory costs).

There was always a crowd on our boats, many people came back to visit 6-7 times over the course of the show to poke and prod every inch of the boats. We were glad to give hundreds of people the opportunity to see in person, the Bavaria Yachts they have been reading and hearing about so much. In addition, charters of the new Bavarias are booking up for this season on the Chesapeake, the excitement continues to build for those anxiously waiting to see the all-new Vision 46 coming in June, and we saw a lot of excitement for our upcoming expansion plans to the Northeast (details to be announced very soon).

The new Spring Show in Annapolis is clearly here to stay, and will grow quickly from here. And Bavaria Yachts will be proud to continue to be part of the shows growth going forward.

Chartering the Chesapeake

What makes the Chesapeake Bay special is its configuration. It has as much coastline as the entire continental United States. The Bay was formed, as glaciers from the last Ice Age began to melt, carving streams and rivers that flowed toward the coast. As the sea level rose, it submerged the area now known as the Susquehanna River Valley. This drowned river valley became the Chesapeake Bay. The Bay has hundreds of creeks, coves and quiet headwaters that offer endless exploration. It is also one of the largest estuaries in the world; all of which means great sailing for you.

First Allocated US Vision 46 Hull Now Available for Purchase

Bavaria Yachts Germany has just released a very limited world wide first allocation of the amazing new Vision Series, and the US will be receiving one Vision 46 in the Spring of 2012. We are offering the exciting opportunity to be the first in the US (and one of the first globally) to own this spectacular new boat that is sure to take the market by storm in 2012.

This first US hull will be loaded with all the exciting features needed to show off the striking premium comfort and luxury of the new Vision Series, including a unique double day-bed in the cockpit area, convertible tables with electrical height control in both the cockpit and salon, “joy stick” docking (with bow and stern thrusters), as well as a slew of other exciting bells and whistles. Bavaria will offer a terrific discount on the purchase of this boat in exchange for approximately 45-60 days of availability in Annapolis for magazine test sails and market access.

The Vision 46 will have four available layouts with either 2 or 3 cabins, and 1 or 2 heads with separate shower rooms. This first US show model will come in the 2-cabin/ 1-head layout.

2011 was a Great Year, Excited for 2012

2011 has been a very exciting year for Bavaria Yachts in the US. On the strength of 35 years of top quality, German engineering, years of dominant market position in Europe, an experienced new leadership team in Germany, and spectacular all-new Cruiser Series designed by Farr Yacht Designs and styled by BMW Designworks, we launched Bavaria Yachts back into the US market.

We began in June with the official opening of our flagship Annapolis office, in conjunction with being the proud title sponsor of the 19th Leukemia Cup Regatta in Annapolis Harbor.

In July, with our partners at Horizon Yacht Charters, we opened the first of many planned Horizon satellite bases across the US, dedicated solely to Bavaria Sailing Yachts. The charter business enjoyed a very successful sailing season, and offered early first-hand ability to experience the ground-breaking new Cruiser Series. In October, four Cruiser models (32, 36, 40, and 45) premiered at the US Boat Show, just across the water from our Annapolis offices. The response, from the hundreds of sailors who stepped aboard our boats, was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Our guests were specifically pleased by the spaciousness, design details, and striking quality of the build and finishes of the boats. We capped a great year with the Bavaria Cruiser 45 being named SAIL Magazine’s Best Boat of 2012 in the category of Cruising Monohulls under 50 feet.

As we look forward to the momentum and excitement continuing to grow into 2012, the company is set to launch yet another line, the new Vision Series, beginning with the unveiling of the first Vision 46 at the Dusseldorf Boat Show on January 21, 2012.

The Vision Series, also designed by Farr Yacht Design and styled by Design Unlimited UK, will hit the sweet spot for comfort and luxury cruising, ideal for couples and single-handed sailing. Both the Vision and the Cruiser Series share the same hallmarks Bavaria is quickly becoming known for in the US: the performance and handling of Farr Yacht Designs, the precision quality of German Engineering, and premium-quality boats made available at competitive mainstream prices thanks to the efficiency of the world’s most advanced factory, as well as, the groundbreaking direct sales and service model established in the US. We will also be announcing plans to expand factory-direct Bavaria locations to Newport, the Great Lakes, and the San Francisco Bay Area over the next 12 months.
